THREE MAJOR WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR EAR
THREE MAJOR WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR EAR
Your ear is not just for hearing. It also helps you to balance. And once hearing is lost, it is very difficult to bring back.
Many people clean their ears wrongly, and damage them with cotton bud, biro cover, and broom stick.
Here are 3 major ways to maintain your ears — simple but very important.
1. STOP DAMAGING YOUR EAR BY YOURSELF — NO COTTON BUD, NO PIN, NO MATCH STICK INSIDE.
Your ear cleans itself. That wax you see is not dirt — it is protection. It traps dust and germs and carries them out naturally.
When you push cotton bud (Q-tip) inside, you are not removing wax. You are pushing wax deeper and you can tear your eardrum.
I have seen people who used car key, pen cover, feather, broom stick to scratch inside. Very dangerous.
WHAT TO DO:
Never insert anything inside your ear canal — not cotton bud, not pin, not toothpick.
Clean only the outer ear (the part you can see) with a clean cloth after bathing.
If you feel blockage, fullness, or too much wax, don't dig it yourself. Go to ENT doctor or your General Hospital. They will wash it safely with warm water or remove it with proper instruments.
Teach your children this too. Many children's eardrums are perforated by cotton bud.
Proverbs 4:23 — "Keep thy heart with all diligence..." — also keep your body gates with diligence.
2. PROTECT YOUR EARS FROM LOUD NOISE AND DIRTY WATER.
Two things kill the ear quickly in Lagos: Loud noise and dirty water.
Loud Noise:
Loud music in earpiece at full volume for hours.
Standing near loud speakers in church or club every week.
Generators, grinding machines, loud DJ at parties.
Shouting into someone's ear.
Inside your ear there are tiny hairs that help you hear. Loud noise kills them. Once they die, they don't grow back. You will start saying "eh? eh? come again" and later you need hearing aid.
Dirty Water:
Swimming in dirty pool or canal water.
Bathing with unclean water entering ear and staying there.
That brings infection — ear begins to pain, brings smelly discharge.
WHAT TO DO:
Reduce earpiece volume to less than 60%. Follow 60/60 rule — not more than 60% volume for not more than 60 minutes at a time. Give your ears rest.
If you work in loud place — music, factory, generator house — use ear muff or ear plug. You can buy from pharmacy.
In church, don't stand directly in front of loudspeakers. Tell your sound engineer to control volume. Loud anointing does not need loud noise that damages ears.
After swimming or bathing, tilt your head to each side to let water come out. Don't leave water inside.
Keep your ear dry. If you swim often, use swimming ear cap.
3. TREAT INFECTIONS, COLDS, AND EAR PAIN QUICKLY — DON'T USE RANDOM EAR DROPS.
Many people have ear pain and they go to chemist to buy any ear drop or they pour palm oil, hot oil, onion water, or spit inside.
Very dangerous. You can worsen infection and lose hearing.
Ear pain, discharge (water, pus, blood coming out), ringing sound (tinnitus), sudden hearing loss, dizziness — these are NOT normal.
They can be caused by:
Cold, catarrh, and sinus that blocks the tube connecting nose and ear.
Infection from dirty cotton bud.
High blood pressure or diabetes.
Certain drugs that damage ear — like some very strong antibiotics, quinine when abused.
WHAT TO DO:
If you have catarrh or cold, blow your nose gently, one side at a time. Don't blow very hard — it pushes germs into ear.
If you have ear pain, ringing, discharge, or sudden hearing loss — go to ENT doctor within 24-48 hours. Early treatment can save your hearing. Late treatment may be too late.
Don't buy ear drops without prescription. Some drops are dangerous if eardrum is already torn.
Control your BP and blood sugar — they affect hearing nerves.
Bring children for hearing check if they don't respond when you call, or they put TV volume very high, or they have delayed speech. Early help is important.
BONUS — DAILY EAR HYGIENE ROUTINE:
Morning: No need to clean inside. Just clean outer ear with towel after bath.
Day: Protect from loud noise. Reduce earphone use.
If you work in noisy place: wear ear protection.
Year: Do ear check once a year, especially if you are over 40, you use earphones daily, you work in noise, or you have diabetes/hypertension.
Your ears are gifts from God. Psalm 40:6 says "Mine ears hast thou opened." God wants you to hear His voice and hear your loved ones clearly for many years.
Don't use biro to open what God has opened.
Take care of your ears today.
